Who knows how to intepret a scale on a map anymore? Why is is so 1:250000 so hard to imagine? In thias activity you measure distnaces between places on real maps and then use the scale to turn these distances into real distances! Then you can check your work with google Earth!

Time 1hour Age 11 - 14 Maths Ratio and Scales



Resources - Enough maps for the whole class working in groups, preferably with different scales, good long rulers and access to Google Earth on at least one computer

Notes

This activity is simple, engaging and effective. Its practical nature is appealing and most of us enjoy looking at maps and comparing relative distances. Its a natural response to check how reasonable answers are and Google Earth just gives us the icing on the cake and a great checking procedure!
